Wow! The 1st 9 weeks has flown by. The kids are doing a fantastic job in the computer lab. Most of them are catching on so quickly. The main thing that they need to practice at home is logging on to Study Island (2nd graders) and Reading Eggs (K & 1st).
This week in the lab I have introduced them to keyboarding. There is a website on the Internet that they can use to practice at home. It is: http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/typing/. The program is called Dance Mat Typing. The kids love it.
We have covered a lot of topics in the lab so far this year (parts of a computer, input/output, using Windows, using the mouse, fall, bullying, keyboarding). Ask your child what they have been doing in the lab. You'll be surprised at how much they know already. The learn so quickly at this age!
Please continue to send in your Capri Suns. All the money that we get from recycling these goes to the computer labs.
As always, please feel free to email me if you have any questions or concerns.

Great Start!
We're off to a great start in the K-2 computer lab this year. The students are catching on quickly to everything. They are learning about parts of the computer and input/output devices.
Second grade began Study Island this week. They can do this at home. The website is: http://www.studyisland.com/. Please have them practice at home. They need to get used to entering their username and password, so we don't spend so much time in class doing this. Study Island is a great way for your child to practice their Math skills. It's fun for them too. They love playing the games.
Kindergarten and First Grade began Reading Eggs this week. This is a great program for your child to practice their letters and sounds. They LOVE this program. The kids can't get enough of it. Please have them practice at home. They need to learn their login and password, so more class time is spent on the program and not trying to login. The website for Reading Eggs is: http://www.readingeggs.com/
Please email me, if you ever have any questions. It's the fastest way to get a response. Don't forget to check out my "What We Are Learning" on my website at MES.

Summer is coming to a close - school soon!
I hope everyone has had a fun and relaxing summer. It's almost over, so enjoy your last 2 weeks.
I'm excited about working with the children again this year in the K-2 Lab. The children seem to really enjoy it and hopefully they're learning a lot about computers along the way.
I will try to communicate throughout the year via this blog and on my MES website. I will periodically post what we're doing in the lab on this blog and under the "What We Are Learning" link on my website. Please feel free to contact me via email, if you ever have any questions. I check my email frequently, so that's the quickest way to reach me.
Enjoy the rest of your summer. I look forward to seeing everyone August 15th!

Week of April 4, 2011
This week is Math Review week for the kindergarten and 1st grade students. They will be spending most of their time using interactive Math activities that go along with their textbook. These are a lot of fun and help enhance their learning of Math skills.
The kindergarten students will also be learning about insects to go along with their theme unit in the classroom. Ask your child about "Icky, Icky Insects". They loved it!
The 2nd grade students will be testing this week while they're in the lab.

This week in the lab the 2nd grade students will be learning about Microsoft Office PowerPoint. They will make a PowerPoint presentation about themselves or something that they are interested in (All About Me, football, dance, etc.).
The K & 1st grade students will be using Reading Eggs. They will also be learning a little bit extra about what they are studying in Math or Social Studies (plants, insects, simple machines, telling time).
All students will watch the video Mrs. McBrayer made about the Run-A-Thon. It has all of the classes, their team names and their cheers!

This week in the K-2 Computer Lab we are watching a BrainPop on spring. We are learning about all of
the changes in weather, plants, and animals that spring brings.
I am also introducing the Enclopedia Britannica Online - elementary school edition website. I am explaining how to use this site. The 2nd grade students are researching a topic and finding 5 facts about their topic. The K & 1st grade students are going to a section of the website that they really enjoyed. It's the K-2 Britannica Learning Zone. The kids can learn all about different animals, countries, volcanoes, books, etc. There is even a section where they can draw.
This is a great resource that your children can use to learn about anything and it's all tailored to the K-2 student. Check it out! http://www.school.eb.com/elementary

This week in the K-2 Computer Lab the K & 1st grade students are learning how to correctly use the CD player in the computers. K students are using Jumpstart Kindergarten software and 1st grade students are using Math Missions software. They love it!
Study Island & Kerpoof are what our 2nd grade students are doing this week. They can use both of these products at home. Please encourage your 2nd grade students to work on Study Island at home. It's great for brushing up on their Math.
Our K & 1st grade students can work on Reading Eggs at home. The kids love this software! It is a wonderful product to help your child with Reading. If you ever have any questions about any of these products, don't hesitate to blog or email me. I hope to use this blog as a means of communication. I can let you know what your children are working on in the lab and you can give me feedback or ask questions.
